Halema`uma`u Crater
This is one of Hawai`i island's most sacred and awe-inspiring
places. When you look inside the giant crater, try to imagine
it as it was from 1905 to 1924 when it was filled with a lake
of molten lava. Prior to 1924 the crater was only 1,500 feet
in diameter. Suddenly in 1924 the lake began draining. Huge
chunks of the crater's walls and floor fractured and collapsed
into the pit. Then groundwater entered the hot cracks in the
walls and floor and boiled up creating steam that caused repeated
explosions for over a week. The large blocks of lava that
now dot the landscape shot out of the crater that week. All
of this short-term upheaval opened Halema`uma`u Crater to
its present diameter of 3,000 feet. At that time its depth
was 1,200 feet, but subsequent eruptions have filled the crater
to a depth of 280 feet.
A final word about visiting the volcano-- this
is a rough and wild place. And it is also a place held sacred
by the Hawaiian people. Follow the park's safety guidelines
and please show honor and respect for the privilege you have
of visiting this place.
