Waipio
Valley
The Waipio Valley is located on the north shore
of the Big Island and is a succession of valleys and steep
cliffs tumbling into the sea. The valley is accessed by 4WD
only or a 20 minute hike. There is a black sand beach that
is hemmed in on both sides by steep valleys, both of which
have waterfalls. The sea can be treachourous at times and
is only safe for swimming and surfing in calm conditions.
Waipio is a friendly community and is a good place to take
in the great views of the river valley and Na'alapa Waterfall.
It is also possible to hike deep into the adjacent valleys,
passing numerous streams and gulches.

When you travel to the Waipi`o
Valley today you not only step into a place steeped in the
history and culture of Hawaii, you are entering one of the
most beautiful places on the face of the earth.
Exploring the valley on horseback.is
highly recommended. The Waipi`o Na`alapa Trail Rides (808-75-0419)
is one of the best way to see the Waipi`o Valley. Another
excellent choice is the Waipi`o Valley Wagon Tours (808-775-9518)
which features a trip through the valley in an open mule drawn
wagon.
