Hiking at Manuka State Park

A couple of times a year we enjoy a leisurely drive through South Kona to Manuka State Park.  We bring a lunch for a picnic at the tables in the park entry area, and then we head out on the marked trail.  This area is forested with many native trees and shrubs including `Ohi`a, Kopiko, Mamaki and Olopua, to name a few.  These are marked with identification tags.  This has been a valuable skills-building playground for me over the years, in learning about Hawai`ian native plants.  The forest canopy is filled with native birds foraging about.  I find actually sightings and identification to be elusive since the birds are so high up, and also many native birds are so tiny and their flight patterns are what I would call "flitting."  They tend to make quick and sudden bursts of flight from one tree to the next and I rarely get a good look.  However, if you are auditory in nature, which I unfortunately am not, you may come to recognize the distinctive songs and calls of specific birds.  You may want to bring your bird and native plant identification books if you take these hobbies seriously.

One of the cool areas of this hike is the large crater in the midst of the forest.

Manuka State Park

To get there drive south from Kailua-Kona about 40 miles.  The park is on what we call the mauka side, on the left and is clearly marked with a large sign.
